Why do I need to eat?

You need food to stay alive. Food gives you energy for all the things you do. Even when you sleep your body uses energy to keep you breathing and keep your heart pumping blood round your body. The more you move and exercise when you’re awake, the more food you need.

Energy from food you eat = Energy to stay alive + Energy to do everything you do

If you eat more food energy than your body uses, your body turns the food into fat and you gain weight. If you don’t eat enough food for all the exercise you do, your body burns the fat in your body and you get thinner. It’s important to eat enough food for all your activities, but not to eat too much.
